Today, more and more circuit boards are assembled with cost-effective SMD parts. But what are the advantages and the disadvantages of SMD technology? Why does it make sense to use in some cases THT technology? And what do the acronyms SMD and THT actually stand for? Continue reading “SMD vs. THT parts”
Several times, people asked me, how to assemble the perfect ambient pedalboard. For this reason, I would like to sketch my very personal design of my pedalboard for ambient and soundscaping sounds in this article. Continue reading “Ambient pedalboard setup”
“I decided to spend a bit more money for a pedalboard and to buy a Gigrig G2 and, beside others, a Strymon Timeline. I am almost sure, that the analog dry through function makes a decisive difference regarding the dry signal. Here is my question: Is it true, that modulation effects can not really deal with analog dry through and phasing problems may occur? Recently, I found the following request in my mailbox:
“I think, I actually would need a Binson Echorec, but they are in fact beyond price. I love the flutter echo mash, that the Echorec is able to create. In the meantime, I think, that an analog delay is able to produce every sound, I long for. Digital delays with analog emulation do not sound that nice to me. But at the same time, I don’t want to get into dept. Could you tell me, if the Ibanez Echo Shifter might be a suitable pedal for me? Especially in contrast to the Ibanez analog delay, AD9, mini or even the EHX Memory Toy? I have already tried to many sappy pedals. Right now, I do (still!) use the Hardwire DL8. But in my opinion, it is too cold and inorganic.”Continue reading “Ask the Dude: Is there a pedal sounding like the Binson Echorec?”
Delay pedals are a great invention and every guitarist should own at least one. But not only guitarist can benefit from the effects of a delay pedal. Bass players also can venture into a new realm by using a delay pedal. But there is one thing you should take into consideration. Continue reading “Delay pedals for bass players?”
One loves the Tubescreamer, the other hates it. It is impossible to keep everyone happy. While to one guitarist the overdrive pedal sounds perfect, stresses the mids in an optimal way and creates the ultimate range of distortion, the same pedal seems hollow with the bass cut quite too much to another guitar player.
