Budget Delays Part III

Ask the DudeThere is an enormous number of nice delay pedals and there is one within everyone’s price range.
Regarding the budget area, you will also find a lot of good delay pedals, analog ones as well as tape emulations and digital delays.

In this three-part series, I would like to present some delays of all three sections that are available for ridiculous prices.

Tape emulations

Regarding digital tape emulations, the Nux Tape Core Deluxe is definitively no insider’s tip anymore. Some people say, it is the budget version of the Strymon El Capistan. Besides stereo outputs and tap tempo it also provides several multi head options. Sonically it is oriented to the Roland Space Echo. A special thing about the Nux Tape Core Deluxe: it has an editor to adjust the sound. Everything for only 60,00€ – a true bargain!

Of course, TC Electronic also offers a tape emulation for little money. But, compared to the Nux Tape Core Deluxe, the TC Electronic Gauss Tape Echo offers a little less feature.

Unfortunately, the Line6 Echopark is only available in used condition. But the tape emulation is pretty nice and still you can get a good bargain on the second-hand-market. Tap tempo, stereo, modulation and even an analog mode. If you can deal with the visual appearance of this delay, you will get a really nice tape echo pedal.

Regarding tape echo emulations, I would also like to introduce and recommend the Ibanez DE7. Regrettably, this pedal also is only available on the second hand market, but the echo mode of the DE7 is unique.
Under various brand names, you will also get a small pedal. Rowin or CNZ Audio for example offer a Tape Echo (actually with reverse mode) for only about 50,00€.

A second-hand Akai Headruh E2 is available for about 100,00€ and offers some exceptional features. Thus, the virtual tape heads can be sent to separate outputs. I tried this feature with four amps some time ago and it is really amazing – but not even practicable. Nevertheless, the Head Spacing option and the tone control make the tape emulation with tap tempo a truly pleasant pedal.

Multi delays

For the guitarist, who is looking for numerous different sounds in one pedal, there are also several well-priced options.
One of the most interesting pedals ought to be the TC Electronic Flashback Delay. Available for about 110,00€, this pedal offers digital, analog, tape emulation, reverse, lofi and modulation – means, nearly every sound, a guitarist can long for.
Besides, the enclosure is quite compact and you will get tap tempo and stereo. What else could you ask for?
Ah, and besides further sound-downloads, the free editor offers the possibility to adapt all sounds to your very own ideas. A certainly great all-rounder.

At first sight, the Mooer Reecho Pro, which is available for about the same price, offers less options than the TC Electronic Flashback. But with this pedal, you will get to possibility to combine all 6 delay sounds like digital, analog and tape (with four effect programs like normal, modulation, dynamic and reverse. Features like stereo, tap tempo and a tone control (low cut, high cut) make it pretty flexible.

The Joyo Aquarius is an extensively equipped pedal with tap function and a tone control for 75,00€. The Aquarius is equipped with 8 delay types and a looper. Unfortunately, it has only mono in- and outputs. Sad for a delay, but for many guitarists, this pedal might be perfect anyway.

The equipment of the Ammoon Pockecho is likewise. For 50,00€ this pedal is an extensively armed delay for beginners.

The Donner Echo Square offers 7 different sounds in a micro enclosure. Regarding the size, the number of features is astonishing and the price of less than 50,00€ seems almost unethical.

For 60,00€ you will get the Nux Time Core Deluxe. An extensively equipped stereo delay with tap tempo and sounds like tape, digital, analog, ping pong, pan, mod, reverse and hold.

Another micro delay has been created by Mooer. The D7 costs about 100,00€ and offers 7 delay sounds with exotic names like liquid, rainbow, galaxy, modverse and lowbit. Besides, you will also get an integrated looper, tap tempo and the D7 is able to save presets.
Actually, it is the most compact multi delay with the most extensively equipment. The looper offers a maximum time of 2.5 minutes and thereby provides more than some boutique loopers!

Regarding the prices of all pedals listed here, you can’t do nothing wrong with each of them. And those who are looking for an extensively equipped delay will get numerous different sounds for little money.
