Review: Royal TS II Overdrive

The Royal TS II is an amp-like overdrive pedal that is handmade in Germany.
It is perfect for British sounds and definitely more than a simple clone of the Ibanez Tubescreamer.

The circuit is based on the legendary Ibanez TS-808 Tubescreamer and, like the legendary archetype, uses the LM1458 IC.
But the circuit of the Royal TS II, which comes along in a robust, worn-white lacquered Hammond enclosure with translucent gold effect, has been improved by some specialties.

Extended tone stack

The extended tone stack guarantees the traditional TS-808 sound as well as more flexible setting options.
Actually, the tone control of the TS-808 only makes sense between a 10 to 14 o’clock position. Otherwise the pedal sounds dull or shrill.
The circuit of the Royal TS II allows a sophisticated adjustment of the tone. Use the additional “Glass” pot to fine-tune the treble.
High-quality smooth-running Alpha allow an infinitely variable adjustment.

“drive” toggle switch

The toggle switch of the Royal TS II permits to choose between three clipping/gain levels.
The Royal TS II provides a battery input as well as a 9V power supply input.
