Recently, I found the following request in my mailbox:
“I think, I actually would need a Binson Echorec, but they are in fact beyond price. I love the flutter echo mash, that the Echorec is able to create. In the meantime, I think, that an analog delay is able to produce every sound, I long for. Digital delays with analog emulation do not sound that nice to me. But at the same time, I don’t want to get into dept. Could you tell me, if the Ibanez Echo Shifter might be a suitable pedal for me? Especially in contrast to the Ibanez analog delay, AD9, mini or even the EHX Memory Toy? I have already tried to many sappy pedals. Right now, I do (still!) use the Hardwire DL8. But in my opinion, it is too cold and inorganic.”Continue reading “Ask the Dude: Is there a pedal sounding like the Binson Echorec?”
Today I’m going to test a very nice pedal: The Crazy Tube Circuits Echotopia. The play of words with echo (resonance) and utopia (wishful thinking/illusion) describes the pedal quite well. The guys from Crazy Tube Circuits categorize the sound of the Echotopia as a retro tape echo for soundscapes. Continue reading “Review: Crazy Tube Circuits – Echotopia”
This is a comparison of the DOD Rubberneck with the Ibanez DE-7.
The DOD Rubberneck has got much midrange and provides the rough sound of a marvelous vintage delay. By using the tone pot you can set beautiful dark delays. The Rubberneck is perfect to create ambient sound and soundscapes. The gain pot enables you to produce grittier delays. All pots are quite interactive and offer numerous setting options.
The special thing about the echo mode of the DE-7 is, that the digital created signal must pass an analog circuit with a JRC 4580, clipping diodes and analog filters. You can easily produce beautiful rhythmical delays. A switch allows to chose between three different delay “ranges” which can be fine-tuned by the delay time pot. Echo and delay can be selected by the mode switch.
In this video I would like to go in to bat for budget analog delay pedals like the Biyang AD-10 Time Machine Analog Delay, the Fame AD-10 Repeat That!, the Valeton AD-10 Analog Delay, the Akai Analog Delay or the Eagletone AD-8 Analog Delay.
