In the first part of this series, I presented some budget tube combos. Here, I would like to give a small overview of several heads.
They are even more handy and you can connect every speaker you like.
Mini heads are pretty functional and flexible. Besides, they are (mostly) cost-effective and fit in almost every gig bag. Continue reading “Lunchbox Tube Amps Part II”

Fulltone Tube Tape Echo vs. Erica Synths Zen Delay
This is a comparison of the Fulltone Tube Tape Echo with the Erica Synths Zen Delay
For both delays do not have true bypass, I used a true bypass looper (Lehle Parallel) for the audio recording.
I would like to present some sonic options by using different modes and filters of the Erica Synths Zen Delay and varying speeds and a higher record level for tape saturation of the Fulltone Tube Tape Echo.

low speed (Tube Tape Echo) Continue reading “Fulltone Tube Tape Echo vs. Erica Synths Zen Delay”
Lunchbox Tube Amps
Small tube amps are pretty popular at the moment. And mostly, they are not much quieter than their big brothers. But of course, they offer a little less clean headroom.
They can be carried easily and they are so much more than just a little toy. Perfect for a jam-session at home or for recording.
In the Studio, even Led Zeppelin did not use a Marshall full stack but a small Supro amp.
Mostly, the prices of these little amps are comparable with the effort for a good effect pedal.
In this three-part series, I would like to present a small overview of well-priced 5Watts tube heads and amps. Continue reading “Lunchbox Tube Amps”

Sound like: Amber Run
For some time, the British band Amber is no longer an insider’s tip and songs like “I found” and “no answers” are definitively high-class tunes.
But their pedalboards also offer some cuties that will make the hearts of guitarists beat faster. Continue reading “Sound like: Amber Run”

Tape Emulation, analog and digital delay – how do they sound with an overdrive pedal (Paul Cochrane Timmy)?
This is a comparison of three different types of delays all accompanied by the Timmy.
For this demo I used a classic analog delay (Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man), a tape echo emulation (Strymon Volante) and a digital delay (Empress Echosystem).
The Paul Cochrane Timmy is probably the best choice, if you are looking for a transparent overdrive. so, go ahead and find out, how it affects every single type of delay depending on the respective kind of playing (like dynamic playing, modulation, in the mix).
If you are looking for a sonic sneak peak, check out 1:22.

Fluctuating mains voltage = different sound?
Almost every guitarist knows this phenomenon: in the rehearsal room the sound of the guitar was absolutely perfect, and the amp has been situated right in the sweet spot. But live on stage, the magic has disappeared. Continue reading “Fluctuating mains voltage = different sound?”
Effect pedals interacting with the whole setup
One loves the Tubescreamer, the other hates it. It is impossible to keep everyone happy. While to one guitarist the overdrive pedal sounds perfect, stresses the mids in an optimal way and creates the ultimate range of distortion, the same pedal seems hollow with the bass cut quite too much to another guitar player. Fender Silverface Deluxe Reverb – Speaker Comparison (Jensen C12N vs. Vintage Oxford)
This is a comparison of two different 12″ speakers which have been (one by one) built into the same Fender Silverface Deluxe Reverb amp.
The first one is a Jensen C12 N Ceramic (current model).
The second one is a Vintage Oxford speaker.
Because I am the DelayDude, I do (self-evident) use a delay for this comparison.

Fake replicas of effect pedals, amps and guitars
Unfortunately, our world is not always good. And in the music business also it is valid: as soon as there is something valuable, there will be falsified copies of it. But how can experts identify fakes? Continue reading “Fake replicas of effect pedals, amps and guitars”
